1. Best Time to Visit

The most pleasant time to visit Chengdu is from March to May and September to November. During these months, the weather is mild and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 26°C. Spring brings blooming flowers and fresh greenery, while autumn offers clear skies and cool breezes, making it perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Summer (June to August) is hot and humid, but it’s a great time to enjoy spicy hot pot and escape the heat in nearby mountains like Qingcheng Mountain. Winter (December to February) is cool and slightly damp, with fewer tourists—ideal for those who prefer a quiet trip and want to experience the cozy atmosphere of Chengdu’s teahouses.

2. Getting There

By Air

Chengdu has two international airports: Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU). Shuangliu Airport is closer to the city center, about 30 minutes by taxi or airport shuttle bus. Tianfu Airport is a newer airport, about 1 hour from the city center by metro or airport express. Both airports have direct flights to major cities in China and many international destinations, including Bangkok, Seoul, Singapore, and London.

By Train

Chengdu is well-connected by high-speed rail and ordinary trains. High-speed trains from Kunming to Chengdu take about 3.5 hours, from Chongqing to Chengdu take 1.5 to 2 hours, and from Beijing or Shanghai to Chengdu take about 6 to 8 hours. The main railway stations are Chengdu East Railway Station and Chengdu Railway Station, both of which are connected to the city’s metro system for easy transfers.

Local Transportation

Metro is the most convenient way to get around Chengdu, with multiple lines covering all major attractions and business districts. You can download the "Tianfu Tong" app to scan QR codes for metro and bus rides. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Didi) are also readily available. For a more authentic experience, rent a shared bike to wander around the old streets and alleys.

3. Top Attractions

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

No trip to Chengdu is complete without visiting the Giant Panda Breeding Base. It is home to over 150 giant pandas and red pandas, where you can watch these cute creatures eat, play, and nap. The best time to visit is in the morning (7:30 to 10:00), when pandas are most active. Don’t miss the Moon Cub Nursery and Sun Cub Nursery, where you can see fluffy panda cubs. Remember to book tickets online in advance, especially during peak seasons.

Jinli Ancient Street

Jinli Ancient Street is a pedestrian street that recreates the charm of old Chengdu. Lined with traditional Sichuan-style buildings, it offers a variety of local snacks, handicrafts, and cultural performances, such as Sichuan opera face-changing. At night, the street is decorated with red lanterns, creating a romantic and lively atmosphere. It’s a great place to experience local culture and buy souvenirs.

People’s Park

People’s Park is the epitome of Chengdu’s leisurely life. Here, you can sit in the historic Heming Teahouse, drink a cup of jian wan cha (covered-bowl tea), and watch locals play mahjong, chat, or get ear cleaning—a unique local experience. The park also has a beautiful lake, lush greenery, and the Monument to the Railway Protection Movement, making it a perfect place to relax and blend into local life.

Qingcheng Mountain & Dujiangyan Irrigation System

A day trip to Qingcheng Mountain and Dujiangyan is highly recommended. Qingcheng Mountain, known as the "Most Serene Mountain Under Heaven," is a sacred Taoist mountain with lush forests, clear streams, and ancient temples. You can take a cable car to the top for stunning views. Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an ancient water management project built over 2,000 years ago—it still plays an important role in irrigating the Chengdu Plain today. A guided tour is recommended to fully understand its ingenuity.

Taikoo Li & IFS

For modern Chengdu, visit Taikoo Li and Chengdu IFS. Taikoo Li is a trendy shopping area that combines traditional courtyard architecture with international brands, cafes, and restaurants. Next to it, Chengdu IFS is famous for the giant panda sculpture climbing on its roof—one of the most iconic photo spots in Chengdu. The area is perfect for shopping, dining, and people-watching.

4. Local Cuisine

Chengdu is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, famous for its Sichuan cuisine, which is known for its bold flavors, numbing (ma) and spicy (la) taste, and diverse dishes. Here are some must-try local foods:

Sichuan Hot Pot

A symbol of Chengdu’s food culture, Sichuan hot pot features a spicy broth made with Sichuan peppercorns, chili peppers, and other spices. You can cook fresh ingredients like beef, mutton, tofu, and vegetables in the broth. For those who can’t handle spicy food, a mild broth is also available.

Mapo Tofu

A classic Sichuan dish, Mapo Tofu is made with soft tofu, minced pork, and a spicy sauce. It’s numbing, spicy, and flavorful, perfect with rice. Many local restaurants serve authentic Mapo Tofu, and it’s a great introduction to Sichuan cuisine.

Local Snacks

Don’t miss Chengdu’s delicious snacks: Dan Dan Noodles (spicy noodles with peanut sauce), Spicy Tofu Pudding (douhua), Roasted Sweet Potato Skin (kao shaopi), and Ice Jelly (bingfen)—a refreshing treat to cool down after eating spicy food. You can find these snacks in Jinli Ancient Street, Jianchang Road, or local food markets.

5. Accommodation

Chengdu offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit all budgets:
  • Budget: Hostels and budget hotels are available near Chunxi Road, Tianfu Square, or the Giant Panda Base. They are affordable and convenient for transportation.

  • Mid-range: Traditional Sichuan-style inns near Jinli Ancient Street or People’s Park offer a unique cultural experience. Many have courtyards and warm hospitality.

  • Luxury: High-end hotels in Taikoo Li, Chunxi Road, or near Tianfu Square provide top-notch facilities and services, perfect for travelers seeking comfort and convenience.

6. Tips for Travelers

  • Respect local culture: Ask for permission before taking photos of local people, especially during traditional activities. Be polite when bargaining in local markets.

  • Spicy food: If you can’t handle spicy food, let the restaurant staff know—they can adjust the spiciness level for you.

  • Weather preparation: Chengdu is known for its mild climate, but it can be rainy. Bring an umbrella or raincoat, and a light jacket for cool evenings.

  • Ticket booking: Popular attractions like the Giant Panda Breeding Base and Dujiangyan require online booking in advance, especially during peak seasons (spring and autumn).

  • Language: Most local people in tourist areas can speak basic English. It’s helpful to download a translation app (like WeChat Translate) for easier communication.
