Chengdu - Qingyang Palace - Dujiangyan Irrigation System - Guanxian Ancient City

This morning, your private guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in downtown Chengdu at the appointed time. We recommend you book a hotel near Chunxi Road or Jinli Ancient Street for both a convenient Chengdu city tour on your own and today’s quick pick-up. If you’re concerned about not selecting the ideal hotel, we’re happy to offer an additional booking service for you.

Let’s set out for the Qingyang Palace. This Taoist temple was originally founded in the 7th century and has long been revered for its profound spiritual energy. Local legends even claim that not only humans but also various mythical beings have engaged in spiritual cultivation here. As you explore the temple complex, you’ll encounter devotees drawing fortune sticks and making wishes, observing firsthand how this ancient site continues to serve as an active center of faith and cultural practice.

Then, we’ll head to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a 1.5-hour drive away. Although built over 2,000 years ago, Dujiangyan embodies the timeless, advanced concept of water management: “draining instead of blocking.” As an alternative to a single dam, the director, Li Bing, designed a series of ingenious engineering layouts based on the natural terrain to channel water and discharge sand, thereby avoiding damage to the ecology by adhering to the hydrological laws of the Min River. When you view the flowing river on site and listen to a detailed explanation based on physical objects from your knowledgeable guide, you’ll gain a deeper and more direct understanding of its greatness.

After visiting the memorial statues of Li Bing and his son at the Two Kings Temple (Erwang Temple), the driver and guide will transfer you to the Guanxian Ancient City, also known as the Ancient Town of Guan County, located in central Dujiangyan City. Upon arrival, the guide will assist you in checking into our well-selected, courtyard-style hotel featuring ubiquitous panda elements, from the large panda mascot at the door to panda robots, panda pillows, and panda paintings. Also, despite being situated in the bustling downtown area, the hotel boasts a tranquil courtyard shaded by soaring ancient trees, perfect for unwinding and resting up for your next journey.

★ An Open Exploration combining Sightseeing & Folk Customs Experience

You will spend the rest of the afternoon with your guide exploring the ancient city, which boasts a history spanning over 2,000 years and retains a distinctly primitive style. At the towering Xuanhua Gate, you can climb the remaining Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) city wall to overlook serpentine alleys flanked by grey-tiled roofed dwellings. On West Street, red lanterns sway lazily in the doorway of old wooden houses, mesmerizing you with the charm of western Sichuan folk residences. Still, the soul of Guanxian Ancient City lies in its vibrant life scene rather than in stereotypical attractions; the scenery in your camera is the home of the locals. Passing by a teahouse with bamboo chairs and wooden tables, you might stop and listen to the locals chatting while eating sunflower seeds, and you can’t help but want to join their laid-back life. If it happens to be Tomb-Sweeping Day (Qingming Festival), you will have the opportunity to witness the “Dujiangyan Water-Releasing Festival,” during which actors and dancers will dress up to perform elaborate traditions commemorating Li Bing and the historical origins of flood control.

Finally, the guide will escort you back to the hotel. If you have no idea where to have dinner and how to spend your free time tonight, ask your experienced guide or see our suggestions below.

► How to Enjoy the Nightlife in the Ancient City (on your own)

As night falls, the ancient architecture, blazing with lights, is not to be missed, especially the South Bridge, whose carved beams and painted eaves shine against the golden lights. Standing on it to overlook the turbulence of the Min River, you will be immersed in the elusive moment. Then, it’s time to satisfy your appetite with local delicacies. The restaurant Mini Bowls Dishes is ideal for trying a variety of cuisines in one go. Devour its signature twice-cooked pork, which is not greasy, thanks to the addition of garlic sprouts and bean paste. Grab thick chicken slices soaked in secret chili oil, which is tasty but not overly spicy. Finish the feast with the sweet and sour fish-flavored shredded pork. Don’t forget to pair them with rice!

Average Cost per Person: CNY 20-40 (USD 3-6)

Restaurant Address: No.18, Jianshe Road, Dujiangyan City

You may be curious about what a panda’s house is like, does panda poop smell bad, what and how much pandas eat daily, and how their food is prepared. Upon arrival, follow your guide to participate in the Giant Panda Volunteer Program and discover the answers.

Leaving the Panda Base, we will proceed to the Chengdu Museum of Shadow Art, which houses over 1,700 sets of shadow puppets. Shadow play, an intangible cultural heritage, is an ancient form of theatre performed by puppeteers who manipulate silhouette figures made from leather or paper with sticks to create moving images on a translucent cloth screen, illuminated from behind and accompanied by music and singing.

At the museum, your guide will accompany you to watch the shadow plays and explain their background stories, including classic passages from Chinese novels, local tales from Chengdu, and original shadow puppet animations. Meanwhile, modern shadow puppetry is also keeping pace with the times by adapting and performing specific Western classics, like “Romeo and Juliet.” Beyond that, do you want to know how shadow puppets are made and how you can use a few wooden sticks to manipulate them to walk, dance, lie down, roll, laugh and even fight? After learning about the entire process of shadow puppet-making, you can try simple shadow puppet coloring or assembly and experience performing with your exclusive shadow puppet.

After finishing all activities, the driver and guide will escort you back to your hotel in Chengdu.

The car is brand new. V rented it for two days: one day for a 10-hour tour in Hong Kong, and one day to take us to Shenzhen to visit and then return us to Hong Kong later that evening. NOT BAD.

For our 25th anniversary, my wife and I booked this Sichuan loop. Our guide Wang picked us up with hot tea, small start to a big adventure. Wolong's pandas were incredible, but the real magic began climbing toward Mount Siguniang. Snow peaks, empty valleys, Wang knowing every photo spot. At 4,700 meters near Litang, my wife felt dizzy. Wang had oxygen ready, made us rest. "No rush," he said. Twenty minutes later, we were walking among yaks on the roof of the world. Yading was worth every bumpy mile. Three holy mountains, turquoise lakes, prayer flags in the wind. Eight days, four thousand meters, one unforgettable anniversary.

I booked this 10-day trip for my parents' 30th anniversary. Dad's 62, mom's not a strong traveler, I was nervous. But Wandrift made everything smooth. our guide Tenzin met us at Lijiang airport with a warm smile and white hada scarves. First few days were gentle wandering Old Town, watching Naxi musicians perform. Mom loved the slow pace. Then came the drive to Shangri-La. Winding ountain roads. Mom started looking pale halfway through. Tenzin noticed immediately. He had the driver pull over at a scenic spot, gave mom some local herbal balm, and let her rest for 20 minutes. "No rush," he said. "The mountains will wait." That small kindness changed everything. We made it to Shangri-La. Mom recovered at the hotel while Tenzin took dad and me to visit a local family. Drank butter tea, learned about their daily life. Next day at Songzanlin Monastery, mom was back to her usual self, snapping photos and asking questions. Other highlights: hiking through Pudacuo's meadows, spotting yaks for the first time, the prayer flags fluttering in the wind. But what I'll remember most is that moment on the mountain road~a guide who cared more about my mom's comfort than keeping schedule. For anyone traveling with older parents in Yunnan, this tour is it.

My friend and I booked this 5days trip for a quick getaway. Zhangjiajie's sandstone pillars looked like something from another planet. Our guide Liu timed the Bailong Elevator perfectly, no lines, just mist rising around us like entering Pandora. At Tianmen Mountain, I froze at the glass walkway. My friend had to drag me across while Liu pretended not to watch. Furong Ancient Town surprised us. The waterfall flowing right through town at night, lights reflecting on water, we just sat there with noodles, saying nothing. Fenghuang felt like stepping back in time. Liu arranged a boat ride at dusk. Our rower sang local songs, lights coming on along the stilted houses. Magic. For a short China trip hitting big sights, this works perfectly.

This hotel was such a nice upgrade on my trip through Xinjiang, Gansu and Ningxia. I was really surprised—China’s desert hotels are just as good as the ones in Morocco!Too bad we only had 2 days in Ningxia. The place is super nice, and all three of us were blown away. They have stargazing sessions and sand dune activities too.And the price here is even cheaper than on Ctrip. I totally recommend it!

As retirees living in Thailand, we usually prefer slower travel, but this 8-day Chengdu, Chongqing, and Zhangjiajie tour struck the perfect balance. Watching giant pandas at their morning feeding at the world’s largest breeding base was pure magic. Our guide, Helen, knew exactly when to arrive to avoid the crowds, her attention to detail was impeccable throughout. In Chongqing, Helen helped us navigate the dizzying levels of Hongya Cave at dusk; watching it transform into a real-life Spirited Away scene along the Jialing River was unforgettable. She even taught us to use Alipay and DiDi=we felt like locals! The Wulong karst bridges left us speechless. But Zhangjiajie? Surreal. Riding the world's tallest outdoor elevator up into those misty quartz peaks felt like entering Pandora. Helen arranged a morning hike along Gold Whip Streat, just us, bird songs, and towering cliffs. Between cities, we experienced China's high speed rail, smooth, punctual, and hitting 300 km each hours. We also tried food delivery apps and bike-sharing with Helen's guidance. Four modern technologies, one exceptional guide. Deeply grateful.

we booked this 11-day trip for our first China visit. From Beijing's grandeur to Shanghai's skyline, every stop impressed. In Beijing, our guide Lucy took us to the Great Wall early, just us and misty mountains. She knew exactly where to stand for photos without crowds. The Forbidden City felt endless in the best way. Xi'an's Terracotta Warriors left us speechless. Lisa arranged a warrior-making workshop where we both failed hilariously at clay molding. That lopsided soldier now sits on our shelf. zhangjiawei stunned us most. Glass bridge had my husband gripping the railing while I laughed. Our guide Michael noticed my fear of heights and quietly suggested the forest path instead, shanghai's Huangpu cruise at night was pure magic. Different cities, different guides, all wonderful. For couples wanting hassle-free China, this tour delivers.
