Arrival in Urumqi

Follow the 4 days Xinjiang Urumqi tour with Turpan to explore the gems of the crown of Xinjiang in northwest China. Just as every book has a preface, Urumqi is the preface to the entire Xinjiang region, the starting point, no matter where your destination is. Upon arrival, your private guide and a driver will wait for you at the airport or train station.

They’ll accompany you on a private tour starting with Xinjiang Regional Museum, collecting more than 32,000 exhibits, which display the region’s ethnic cultures and the history highlighted by the Silk Road. Whether you are a cultural explorer or a history buff, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find its essence, and some treasures, like the mummies, also lend to its aura.

★ Marvel at the Beauty of Loulan – A 3,800-year-old Mummy!

Among the 12 well-preserved dead bodies in the museum, a lady’s dry corpse, unearthed in 1980, dates back more than 3,800 years. According to the restoration of archaeologists, it could be a beautiful woman during her lifetime, and thus it is hailed as the “Beauty of Loulan”. It was found that the organs inside the mummy were basically preserved, only flattened a little due to dehydration and that’s the biggest difference from mummies of Egypt, which were formed by hollowing out the internal organs, with preservatives placed in. The ‘Beauty of Loulan’ has not undergone any physical or chemical processing and is entirely formed due to the region’s dry climate.

Apart from dry corpses, you’ll also appreciate the exquisite tomb treasures from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), like the painted wooden figurine of the Heavenly King treading on ghosts, and the Fuxi and Nuwa Painting, two human creators in Chinese mythology, who have human upper bodies but snake lower bodies intertwining together. Other exhibits like ancient Chinese musical instruments, grotto and mural arts, as well as the relics about the Silk Road, are all well worth a detailed exploration. After the visit, your guide and the driver will escort you to a comfortable hotel for check-in.

► Warm Tip: The regional museum closes on Mondays (except for holidays). If you happen to arrive on Monday, we’ll arrange the Red Mountain Park (Hongshan Park) instead, which is so named because its western cliff presents a unique ochre red color. Here you can enjoy a stunning sweeping view of Urumqi City and the distant snow-capped mountains, while taking in the lush green plants and blooming flowers.

This morning, your private guide and the driver will accompany you on an excursion to the alpine Heavenly Lake, standing about 1,910 meters (6,266 ft.) above sea level, mainly formed from the glacial meltwater. Framed by deep blue waters and snow-frosted peaks with spruce trees, the lake boasts incredible, unspoiled natural scenery. After about a 1-hour drive, you’ll arrive at the entrance, and then follow the guide to hop on a sightseeing bus to the lake area, which takes about 30 minutes. An insider tip for you: grab a window seat on the right side, allowing you to witness more jaw-dropping mountain scenery and a small lake. After getting off, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the turquoise lake. To put it slightly exaggeratedly, deep breathing here can intoxicate you with oxygen due to the abundance of spruce trees; it is said that each puff would add 0.6 seconds to your life. If interesting, explore a lakeside temple and climb up the mountain to overlook the emerald lake, presenting different green hues under sunlight. A cruise is also possible at your own expense, costing CNY 100 (USD 14) per person for around 40 minutes. Finish sightseeing, and we’ll go back to downtown Urumqi.

After lunch, enjoy an exploration of the treasure-filled Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, also the largest one in China. It amplifies the unique charm of Xinjiang, not only does it offer a wide variety of local delicacies like baked mutton stuffed buns, lamb kebabs, handmade yogurt, and milk naan, and ethnic-style ornaments such as carpets and musical Instruments, but it's also a perfect spot to appreciate Islamic architecture, and peruse shops and stalls selling traditional handicrafts, spices, and souvenirs. There are also plenty of cultural activities, mostly local singing and dancing, or instrument playing, held in front of some shops to draw customers, while some shows will also be performed on the square at a fixed schedule. Soak up the lively, cheerful, and joyous atmosphere and interact with the passionate locals; however, if you want to purchase any souvenirs, make sure to bargain at least 30% off the initial price. In the end, your guide will escort you back to your hotel.

Urumqi - Turpan
Catering

After breakfast, your private guide and the driver will accompany you on a 3.5-hour road trip to Turpan. En route, enjoy the breathtaking mountain ranges stretching to the horizon, beautiful mirror-like lakes, adorable flocks of sheep and horses, as well as countless windmills. It is said that each of the windmills costs around CNY 20 to 50 million (USD 2.8 to 7 million), and the diameter of a large blade exceeds 100 meters (1,970 ft.), generating about 8-10 kWh of electricity per circle. Upon arrival in Turpan, our first stop is the 2,300-year-old Ancient City of Jiaohe, dubbed the "Pompeii of the East", featuring the largest and best-preserved earthen architecture in the world. The UNESCO-listed site is a city “carved directly out of the earth”, constructed by digging underground downwards. Follow the guide to stroll through the ancient city ruins, exploring the preserved urban layout similar to that in the capital city of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), which encompasses markets, government offices, Buddhist temples, pagodas, streets and alleys, as well as workshops, residences, and military training grounds. The ruins of Buddhist temples and pagodas are testament to the westward spread of Chinese Buddhism, also witnessing the culture-melting Silk Road history. At last, overlook the whole city ruins from the observation deck, and it looks like a willow leaf or a small boat.

► Warm Tips:
1.    As there is no shade in the scenic area, please take a sunhat, sunglasses, and wraps to protect you from the scorching sunlight and wind carrying sand.
2.    No store is available inside, and you’d better prepare water and snacks before departure.

Afterward, we’ll head to the region’s famous Karez System, a unique set of water supply systems that draw water from deep underground, minimizing evaporation loss to the greatest extent. Its core is vertical walls and underground tunnels, which utilize the height difference of the terrain to slowly lead the underground water to the surface. However, it takes several years or even decades to finish one, with only simple tools such as pickaxes and shovels. During the construction, many people are well aware that they would never have a sip of water from a Karez well in their lifetime; but for the sake of their descendants, they had never stopped. Some elderly people would volunteer to build dangerous sections, leaving living chances for the younger. Leaving the impressive engineering wonder, we’ll come to the Islamic-style Emin Minaret. The 37-meter-high (121-foot) cylindrical tower was constructed of yellow-grey bricks, narrowing gradually from the bottom to top, with several kinds of traditional Uyghur geometric patterns, such as diamond-shaped, water ripples, and four-petal patterns, whose façade resembles an exquisite ethnic weaving from a distance. Finish the visit, and your guide will escort you to a well-selected hotel for check-in.

Turpan Departure
Catering

After breakfast, continue your Turpan tour itinerary from Urumqi to the Ancient City of Gaochang. The guide will accompany you to this UNESCO-listed ancient city to take in its three-tiered structure of outer city, inner city, and palaces, as well as Khan's Fortress, beacon towers, and Buddhist pagodas. The famous monk Xuanzang (602-664 AD) once stayed here for about one month and gave sermons during his westward journey to India. Later, move on to Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, the most mysterious chapter of Xinjiang, silently displaying the splendor of Buddhist culture a thousand years ago through numerous exquisite Buddhist murals about the enlightenment of Sakyamuni. However, it is a pity that most paintings, statues and murals suffer from serious destruction, and some have been “taken” and shipped abroad by German, Japanese, and British archaeologists in the early 20th century. Then, it is followed by a stopover at the nearby Flaming Mountains, which got the name because of its torturous temperatures, reaching about astonishingly 70℃ (158℉) and even higher at summer noon.

After that, your guide and the driver will escort you to the Tupan train station for your onward journey. If you’d like to leave from Urumqi airport with more frequent flights to other cities, we could also arrange a private transfer there. Wish you a pleasant journey!

► Warm tip: If you plan to continue your tour to explore the Mogao Grottoes in the Silk Road oasis, Dunhuang, we kindly suggest that you add one night in Turpan, as the train generally departs in the morning.

The car is brand new. V rented it for two days: one day for a 10-hour tour in Hong Kong, and one day to take us to Shenzhen to visit and then return us to Hong Kong later that evening. NOT BAD.

For our 25th anniversary, my wife and I booked this Sichuan loop. Our guide Wang picked us up with hot tea, small start to a big adventure. Wolong's pandas were incredible, but the real magic began climbing toward Mount Siguniang. Snow peaks, empty valleys, Wang knowing every photo spot. At 4,700 meters near Litang, my wife felt dizzy. Wang had oxygen ready, made us rest. "No rush," he said. Twenty minutes later, we were walking among yaks on the roof of the world. Yading was worth every bumpy mile. Three holy mountains, turquoise lakes, prayer flags in the wind. Eight days, four thousand meters, one unforgettable anniversary.

I booked this 10-day trip for my parents' 30th anniversary. Dad's 62, mom's not a strong traveler, I was nervous. But Wandrift made everything smooth. our guide Tenzin met us at Lijiang airport with a warm smile and white hada scarves. First few days were gentle wandering Old Town, watching Naxi musicians perform. Mom loved the slow pace. Then came the drive to Shangri-La. Winding ountain roads. Mom started looking pale halfway through. Tenzin noticed immediately. He had the driver pull over at a scenic spot, gave mom some local herbal balm, and let her rest for 20 minutes. "No rush," he said. "The mountains will wait." That small kindness changed everything. We made it to Shangri-La. Mom recovered at the hotel while Tenzin took dad and me to visit a local family. Drank butter tea, learned about their daily life. Next day at Songzanlin Monastery, mom was back to her usual self, snapping photos and asking questions. Other highlights: hiking through Pudacuo's meadows, spotting yaks for the first time, the prayer flags fluttering in the wind. But what I'll remember most is that moment on the mountain road~a guide who cared more about my mom's comfort than keeping schedule. For anyone traveling with older parents in Yunnan, this tour is it.

My friend and I booked this 5days trip for a quick getaway. Zhangjiajie's sandstone pillars looked like something from another planet. Our guide Liu timed the Bailong Elevator perfectly, no lines, just mist rising around us like entering Pandora. At Tianmen Mountain, I froze at the glass walkway. My friend had to drag me across while Liu pretended not to watch. Furong Ancient Town surprised us. The waterfall flowing right through town at night, lights reflecting on water, we just sat there with noodles, saying nothing. Fenghuang felt like stepping back in time. Liu arranged a boat ride at dusk. Our rower sang local songs, lights coming on along the stilted houses. Magic. For a short China trip hitting big sights, this works perfectly.

This hotel was such a nice upgrade on my trip through Xinjiang, Gansu and Ningxia. I was really surprised—China’s desert hotels are just as good as the ones in Morocco!Too bad we only had 2 days in Ningxia. The place is super nice, and all three of us were blown away. They have stargazing sessions and sand dune activities too.And the price here is even cheaper than on Ctrip. I totally recommend it!

As retirees living in Thailand, we usually prefer slower travel, but this 8-day Chengdu, Chongqing, and Zhangjiajie tour struck the perfect balance. Watching giant pandas at their morning feeding at the world’s largest breeding base was pure magic. Our guide, Helen, knew exactly when to arrive to avoid the crowds, her attention to detail was impeccable throughout. In Chongqing, Helen helped us navigate the dizzying levels of Hongya Cave at dusk; watching it transform into a real-life Spirited Away scene along the Jialing River was unforgettable. She even taught us to use Alipay and DiDi=we felt like locals! The Wulong karst bridges left us speechless. But Zhangjiajie? Surreal. Riding the world's tallest outdoor elevator up into those misty quartz peaks felt like entering Pandora. Helen arranged a morning hike along Gold Whip Streat, just us, bird songs, and towering cliffs. Between cities, we experienced China's high speed rail, smooth, punctual, and hitting 300 km each hours. We also tried food delivery apps and bike-sharing with Helen's guidance. Four modern technologies, one exceptional guide. Deeply grateful.

we booked this 11-day trip for our first China visit. From Beijing's grandeur to Shanghai's skyline, every stop impressed. In Beijing, our guide Lucy took us to the Great Wall early, just us and misty mountains. She knew exactly where to stand for photos without crowds. The Forbidden City felt endless in the best way. Xi'an's Terracotta Warriors left us speechless. Lisa arranged a warrior-making workshop where we both failed hilariously at clay molding. That lopsided soldier now sits on our shelf. zhangjiawei stunned us most. Glass bridge had my husband gripping the railing while I laughed. Our guide Michael noticed my fear of heights and quietly suggested the forest path instead, shanghai's Huangpu cruise at night was pure magic. Different cities, different guides, all wonderful. For couples wanting hassle-free China, this tour delivers.
